+ What Is a Concussion?

A concussion is classified as a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) which occurs due a neurochemical change in your brain. Unfortunately, concussions cannot be seen on imaging at this time and are often diagnosed based on symptoms alone. Many times, the symptoms following concussions are short term, however there are many people who experience prolonged symptoms. These prolonged symptoms often require specialized treatment from trained physical and occupational therapists to resolve.

+ What Are the Signs of a Concussion?

Someone who has suffered a concussion will demonstrate certain observable signs, such as:

  • The inability to recall events before or after the concussion incident
  • A confused or stunned appearance
  • Awkward movements
  • Slowed speech
  • Forgetfulness
  • Moodiness and personality changes

+ What are the Symptoms?

Signs and symptoms may appear quickly and dramatically after the concussion occurs. However, these sometimes take a while to appear and are more subtle. The most common physical symptoms include:

  • Headache or feeling of pressure in the head
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Blurred vision
  • Sluggish or groggy feeling
  • Confusion
  • Sensitivity to light and noise

+ Common Causes

Although the brain is surrounded by cerebrospinal fluid and the hard, protective skull, it is susceptible to injury from a bump or hit to the head. A sudden, whiplash-like movement that causes the brain to collide with the inner skull can harm the brain’s cells and create chemical changes. Most concussions occur as the result of:

Automobile accidents Sports injuries Falling Playground injuries Bicycle riding

+ Risk Factors

Anyone can get a concussion in an accident. Those at a higher risk include:

  • Older adults and younger children who are more likely to fall
  • Youth who participate in sports
  • Military personnel who work with explosives
  • Anyone involved in an automobile collision
  • Anyone with a history of a concussion

+ How Long Does a Concussion Last?

Recovery time varies in each individual based on severity of injury and risk factors for prolonged recovery, but on average recovery occurs in 7-14 days. While you should wait to return to sports prior to clearance from your physician or PT, research has shown us that early treatment (as early as the day post injury) is effective in avoiding prolonged symptoms and allowing for a faster return to play. Here at Coastal Movement Specialists our trained physical and occupational therapists will work with you to develop an individualized plan of care to get you on the road to recovery.

  • Restoration of strength and endurance at the proper time
  • Balance training
  • Vestibular training for persistent dizziness
  • Visual therapy for blurred vision
