Common Sports Injuries
Injuries are common for those taking part in organized sports and personal fitness activities. Each sport and activity carries its own risk for participants, and injuries occur no matter how much you train, stretch, and take all available precautions. When an injury occurs, your goal is to recover as quickly and thoroughly as possible. At Coastal Movement Specialists, our trained physical and occupational therapists can help you reach this goal:
+ ACL Injury
Tearing or injuring the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a common injury when participating in sports that require sudden changes in direction or abrupt stops. Athletes who take part in football, soccer, basketball, downhill skiing, and gymnastics experience the most ACL injuries. The injury causes sharp pain and a popping sound. Our therapists can help reduce your pain and swelling, strengthen your leg muscles, and regain your range of motion.
+ Meniscus Injury
A meniscus injury or tear commonly happens when twisting the knee while skiing, wrestling, or playing sports such as football, basketball, and baseball. The meniscus is cartilage found between the bones of your knee that provides cushioning for this critical joint. The medial and lateral meniscus in each knee absorbs impact to your knee and leg. This cartilage also provides lubrication and makes your knee more stable. Many meniscal tears respond well to physical therapy and do not require surgery.
+ Golfer’s Elbow
Golfer’s or thrower’s elbow causes pain on the inside of the elbow. It typically occurs in individuals who repetitively use their forearm, wrist, or hand. Swinging a golf club or throwing a ball aren’t the only causes. Construction workers, plumbers, carpenters, typists, landscapers, and others who rely on frequent and lower arm movements can develop golfer’s elbow, also known as medial epicondylitis. Physical and occupational therapy can help relieve your pain and restore your elbow’s strength and motion.
+ Tennis Elbow
Frequently playing sports such as tennis, squash, and racquetball can cause pain on the outer elbow that radiates to the forearm and wrist. This condition, known as lateral epicondylitis, can make it challenging to grasp and lift light objects or open a jar without causing pain. You may eventually notice stiffness and weakening of your elbow. Our therapists can design a custom treatment plan to reduce your pain and speed up your recovery.
+ Ankle Sprain
One of the most common of all sports injuries is ankle sprains, which occur with excessive twisting or turning. This can overstretch or tear the ligaments that help stabilize your ankle by holding its bones together. Ankle sprains can cause pain, swelling, and difficulty standing or walking. We can help reduce your pain and regain range of motion, strength, flexibility, and balance.
